Quadriga FAQ

This information should provide a thorough and factual understanding and overview about brake fluid from some more common questions asked. Always consult with a professional mechanic before attempting maintenance on your vehicle.

Q. What is DOT Certification?

A. DOT certification simply means DOT Compliancy. This tells the end user that the fluid meets the specifications as stated by DOT (Department of Transportation).

Q. What are some Brake Fluid Specifications?

A. The Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard #116 (FMVSS 116.) state that under their standards there are three Department of Transportation (DOT) minimal specifications for brake fluid. They are: DOT 3, DOT 4, and DOT 5.1 (fluids based with Polyalkylene Glycol Ether) and DOT 5 (Silicone based fluids).

Q. What is Dry Boil Point?

A. Dry Boiling Point is also known as Equilibrium Reflux Boiling Point (ERBP). This is the temperature at which the fluid begins to boil when tested in the manner described by the DOT. DOT 3 brake fluids Dry Boil Point is 401°F and DOT 4 is 446F°. GS610™ has a maximum tested boil point of 626°F.

Q. What is Wet Boiling Point?

A. Wet Boil Point is also known as Wet Equilibrium Reflux Boiling Point (Wet ERBP). This too is the temperature at which the fluid begins to boil when tested in the manner described by the DOT. DOT 3 brake fluids Wet Boil Point is 284°F and DOT 4 is 311F°. GS610™ has a wet boil point of 417°F.

Q. What is Viscosity?

A. Viscosity is a term we hear when talking about engine oil. Basically viscosity is the flow of fluid and applies to brake fluid too though the measuring technique is a bit different. What is important is that the higher the viscosity number, the slower the flow of the fluid. The DOT 3 specification for viscosity at -40°F is 1500 cSt and the specification for DOT 4 at -40°F is 1800 cSt. Even though DOT 3 brake fluid flows better at the testing temperature than the DOT 4 the Dry and Wet Boil Points for DOT 3 are less than DOT 4. GS610™ has a viscosity of 1550cSt and should be noted the specification at 212°F for all DOT specifications is 1.5 cSt.
